Legal Counsel

Job Location


The Legal Counsel provides strategic and tactical legal guidance and support to DCANS Investments, and relevant groupwide activities. They will proactively identify and address new and complex issues facing their teams as well as respond to issues that arise in their designated areas(s) of Subject Matter Expertise across all of The DCANS Group.

The Counsel must demonstrate legal expertise, including creative problem solving, in all areas of interest to the Company and the industry, and maintain productive relationships across the Company, in the industry and with regulators. The successful candidate will possess excellent business sense and judgment, well-developed analytical problem-solving abilities, and solid interpersonal and relationship skills. This position will provide support in the following substantive areas:

• Licensing compliance;

• Foreclosure litigation;

• Employment & general litigation.

• Consumer protection;

• Commercial contracts;



Key Responsibilities (but not limited to):

• Maintain knowledge of applicable licensing requirements and monitor compliance;

• Identify and implement process improvements and other compliance-related initiatives;

• Stay up-to-date on relevant industry, employment and licensing laws, and other developments to be able to give the most effective advice;

• Manage foreclosure litigation;

• Respond to third party and employment-related subpoenas/claims;

• Provide practical, business-oriented and actionable advice in terms non-lawyers can understand;

• Draft, review, and provide appropriate advice regarding complex commercial contracts involving agencies, sponsorships, promotional partners, consultants and vendors

• Review, draft, and negotiate contracts for professional services (channel sales and marketing agreements, construction contacts with subcontractors, confidentiality/nondisclosure agreements, consulting agreements, etc.) and other industry related agreements;

• Proactively identify and address new and complex issues facing the business in a highly regulated market including both financial and reputational risks. Additionally provide creative solutions to complex trade practice issues

• Deliver accurate, creative, timely, and user-friendly legal advice and training in a fast paced, competitive environment without routine supervision

• Keeping clients appropriately informed and provide legal leadership as a member of your Clients Leadership Teams

• Managing outside counsel and internal Legal Department policies and procedures

• Add value to the business by supporting new business initiatives and projects and positively influence outcomes through persuasion and collaboration

• Partner with other Counsels and/or your colleagues to streamline legal processes to reduce time and expense related to contract review, marketing review, reduce turnaround time, and increase overall efficiency of Legal team

• Execute special assignments and supporting corporate initiatives outside areas of designated responsibility as requested by the General Counsel

• Assure General Counsel’s familiarity with key issues confronting the business and developments in designated areas of expertise

• Maintain Subject Matter Expertise in the areas designated by keeping current on all relevant developments in law

• Deliver advice and provide support on all employment law matters, including reviewing and approving employee policies and procedures

• Deliver advice and providing support on all intellectual property matters, product innovation, including review of relevant regulations.



Basic Qualifications/Requirements:

• 2-5+ years relevant litigation & transactional experience, including experience with a leading law firm or major corporation

• Experience in a large law firm handling commercial or consumer protection issues and/or in-house law department drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial and customer-facing agreements strongly preferred

• Must be a member in good standing of the Ghana Bar;

• Extensive experience in contract drafting, interpretations and negotiation as well as regulatory compliance

• Demonstrated ability to master wide ranging fields of law including; Marketing, Advertising & Employment law and apply them in complex problem solving in support of business and to communicate critical information in an effective manner

• Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly identify and prioritize issues and devise solutions

• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills;

• Ability to quickly work through complicated legal issues and grasp complex business models;

• Team-oriented, with the ability to work under pressure in fast-paced environment with scrupulous attention to detail;

• Strong analytical and problem-resolution skills; exceptional business judgment, with the ability to think strategically and give practical advice by balancing business needs with legal risks;

• The ability to interface with, gain the respect of, and maintain relationships with stakeholders at all levels and functions of the company
